Encoding for YouTube
Brian Gary recently posted a great tutorial on how to encode for YouTube using Compressor. His settings vary slightly from the settings I suggested in RWVC, but not very much over all (I was uning Episode Pro, not Compressor, FYI). The one area I disagree with him on is the scaling – though they display at a higher resolution, all YT videos are compressed to 320×240 (for 4×3 content). Brian does note this at the end of his tutorial, but also said he had better quality luck when he compressed to the higher picture resolution. I didn’t – in fact mine looked worse, though I was using H.264 as my codec, not Photo-JPEG. We still both agree the Saturation has to be juiced up to help compensate for the suckitude (yeah, I made a word up, sue me) which def helps somewhat. He does not, as do I in RWVC that the amount of Image tweaks you make is really dependent on your source, so it is going to take some playing around to figure it out, event if you are using a guide.
I will have to give his a shot and see if they are better than mine!
Regardless, its a damn good write up and should help anybody trying to make their YT videos look less “sucky.”

Well, for better of worse, you have found yourself in my little corner of the web.
RWVC.com is a sister-site for my book, Real World Video Compression, which was published by Peachpit. The goal of this site, much like the book, is to demystify video compression and help those looking to tackle problems they are having converting their video from one format to another.
